Learn how to qualify for a scholarship to receive the training you need to work for one of our members. Will I Qualify? There are a few steps in the qualification process: eligibility determination, education planning, pre-screening interviews, and employer interviews. In some situations, special information sessions may be offered to discuss the scholarship process, review the job description(s), and highlight local training programs. Step 1- Eligibility Determination Scholarships are funded by No Worker Left Behind, Workforce Investment Act, and other funding sources that may require eligibility determination based on income, employment status, or other criteria. Most positions within the healthcare industry require that applicants present a clean background check. Felony and many misdemeanor convictions may make you ineligible for employment with a healthcare provider. Step 2- Education Planning An academic assessment is necessary to ensure that scholarship applicants are within the range necessary to succeed in the training program and eventually on the job. Don’t worry, this is not a pass or fail test. It simply lets us know where you are and how much work, if any, needs to be done to prepare you for training. Scholarship applicants will meet with an academic advisor who will walk them through the course requirements and class schedules. This will help us understand when the scholarship applicant will complete their certification and be ready for employment in their new career. Some training programs have selective admittance procedures; scholarship applicants may be required to show proof of acceptance into the program for you wish to receive the scholarship. Step 3- Pre-Selection Process Scholarship applicants will be invited to participate in resume and interviewing workshops and later a pre-screen interview. Participation in and results from these activities will be reviewed along with your education plan and eligibility determination results. These factors will be matched with the participating employer(s) requirements and referrals will be made to the final interview with the employer. Step 4- Employer Interview The final step in the scholarship award selection process is an interview with the employer. This should be treated as an actual employment interview. This employer will be making the final decision on who they would like to see receive the scholarship award. If I am selected, what happens next? If you are awarded a scholarship, you will work with a Capital Area Michigan Works! employment specialist to get started with school registration. Many of the employers may require or have part-time employment or volunteer opportunities while you are completing training. What if I am not selected? Should you not be selected for a scholarship by the employer, it is not the end of your journey. There is a network of resources available through Capital Area Michigan Works! to assist you in achieving your career goals; and many new opportunities become available each day. You may be referred to opportunities with other employers or find that you are still eligible to receive funds for your training program.
